Waterproof Flooring for Laundries, Kitchens and Wet Areas

By Clive Streatfield, Gold Coast flooring installer since 1994 · Updated 13 October 2026

    Quick answer

For laundries, kitchens, powder rooms and back entries on the Gold Coast, waterproof vinyl plank or hybrid flooring is usually the most practical choice: the planks are not damaged by water, they are easy to clean and they can run continuously from the living areas. Glue-down vinyl plank or sheet vinyl suits small rooms with a floor waste and commercial wet areas. A waterproof plank is not the same as a waterproofed room, so shower areas and other zones that need a waterproofing membrane are a job for a licensed waterproofer and tiler, not a floating floor.

    The short answer

If you are replacing the floor in a laundry, kitchen, toilet, mudroom or back entry, choose a floor that water cannot damage. On the Gold Coast that usually means vinyl plank or hybrid flooring. Both are made from materials that do not swell, rot or stain when they get wet, and both come in timber-look and stone-look designs that can continue from your living areas without a change in floor.

For small rooms with a floor waste, such as a separate toilet or a compact laundry, glue-down vinyl plank or sheet vinyl gives a tighter, more water-resistant surface than a floating floor. In commercial kitchens, amenities and staff rooms, sheet vinyl with welded seams is the standard choice.

What a floor covering cannot do is replace the waterproofing of the room itself. Showers, wet bathroom floors and other areas that need a waterproofing membrane under them are built by a licensed waterproofer and tiler. We explain where that line sits further down.

Waterproof plank versus a waterproofed room

Product brochures describe hybrid and vinyl plank as waterproof, and that is true of the plank: water sitting on the surface will not harm it. A floating floor, however, is a series of planks clicked together over an underlay. If a large amount of water gets under the planks through the edges, expansion gaps or doorways, it can sit on the slab, cause odours and mould under the floor, and damage skirting boards and the walls behind them.

So the right way to think about it is this. A waterproof floor handles spills, wet feet, a dripping washing basket or a mopped floor without any harm. It is not designed to hold back a flood from a burst hose or to be the waterproof layer under a shower. That is why we pay attention to the edges, the floor waste and the sealing details in wet areas, and why some rooms are better suited to glue-down or sheet products than to a floating floor.

Floors that suit laundries and wet areas

Here is how the common options compare in rooms where water is part of daily life.

    • Click vinyl plank: waterproof planks, softer and quieter underfoot, usually the most affordable option, and a good match for laundries, kitchens and entries on a flat slab.
    • Glue-down vinyl plank: the planks are bonded to the slab, so there is no underlay for water to travel through and the floor is very stable; a strong choice for small rooms with a floor waste.
    • Hybrid flooring: waterproof planks with a rigid core that feels firm like timber and bridges small dips in the slab; ideal when the laundry or kitchen opens onto a living area finished in the same floor.
    • Sheet vinyl: continuous sheets with few or no joins, used in commercial kitchens, amenities and other areas that are cleaned often with water.
    • Carpet: not recommended for laundries, kitchens or toilets, because it holds moisture and odours.
    • Timber and wood-fibre laminate: not recommended for laundries and toilets; timber is not waterproof, and laminate cores can swell if water gets into the joins.

    Laundries

The laundry is the room most likely to see standing water, from an overflowing tub, a leaking washing machine hose or wet towels dropped on the floor. Vinyl plank and hybrid both handle this well, and many Gold Coast homes run the same floor from the kitchen through to the laundry so the home feels larger and there is no trip edge at the doorway.

A few details make a laundry floor last. We check the slab for level, because water finds the low spots, and we plan the floor around the floor waste so the trim sits neatly and the waste still works. Where the washing machine sits, a machine tray or a flood-stop tap on the hoses is cheap insurance. Along the edges, trims and sealing that suit a wet room are a better finish than open gaps where water can run under the floor.

If your laundry is very small, has a floor waste in the middle or is often wet, glue-down vinyl plank is worth considering. It sits tight to the slab, it does not move, and there is no underlay underneath for water to soak into.

    Kitchens

Kitchens see constant small spills, mopping and foot traffic, which is why waterproof hybrid and vinyl plank are so common in Gold Coast kitchens. They are easy to wipe clean, comfortable to stand on and come in designs that suit everything from coastal oak looks to darker timber tones.

In a kitchen, the main planning question is the cabinetry. Floating floors need room to expand and contract, so we usually install them up to the kickboards rather than under fixed island benches and heavy built-in joinery. If you are renovating the whole kitchen, talk to us before the new cabinets go in so the order of work suits both trades. Dishwashers and fridges with water lines should be disconnected before installation day and checked for leaks when they are reconnected.

Toilets, powder rooms and back entries

A separate toilet or powder room is a good candidate for vinyl plank or hybrid, as long as the room does not have a shower. The floor is trimmed neatly around the toilet pan and finished with a flexible seal so mopping water stays on top of the floor. Glue-down vinyl plank is often the neatest result in these small rooms.

Back entries, mudrooms and the doors to the pool or garden take wet feet, sand and grit every day. A waterproof plank with a strong wear layer copes well here, and a good mat inside each door stops most of the sand before it reaches the rest of the home. For beachside suburbs, see our guide to the best flooring for Gold Coast homes, which covers sand and salt air in more detail.

Bathrooms and showers: where floor coverings stop

Bathrooms with a shower are different. In Queensland, wet areas such as shower recesses and the floor around them need a waterproofing membrane installed under the finished surface, and that work is carried out by a licensed waterproofer as part of a bathroom renovation. Tiles are the usual finish over that membrane.

A floating vinyl or hybrid floor is not a substitute for that membrane and is not designed to go inside a shower. In some bathrooms, a floor covering can be installed in the dry area outside the shower zone, but it depends on the room layout, the existing waterproofing and the product's instructions. If you are planning a bathroom renovation, start with your builder or bathroom renovator. If you only need to update a laundry, toilet or kitchen floor, that is work we supply and install across the Gold Coast.

    Subfloor preparation in wet areas

Wet areas are where poor preparation shows up first. Slabs in laundries and bathrooms often fall toward a floor waste, and older homes may have leftover tile adhesive, old vinyl or uneven patches where tiles have been removed. A new floor laid over those problems can flex, gap or let water collect in the low spots.

Before installation we check the slab with a straightedge, remove old floor coverings, grind high spots and level low areas where needed. If existing tiles are flat and firmly bonded, hybrid can sometimes go straight over them, which our guide to laying flooring over tiles explains. Removal of the old floor, subfloor preparation and the trims are included in our written quote, so there are no surprises on the day.

    Slip resistance and safety underfoot

Wet floors can be slippery, so the surface finish matters as much as the material. A textured or embossed plank gives better grip than a smooth, glossy one, and many vinyl and hybrid ranges are available with slip-resistance ratings. For commercial kitchens and amenities, we supply slip-resistant vinyl products suited to the space. At home, a mat at the laundry door and beside the bath or shower adds grip where feet are wettest.

    Caring for a wet-area floor

Day-to-day care is simple. Wipe up spills when they happen, sweep or vacuum to remove grit, and mop with a damp mop and a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid steam mops, which push heat and moisture into the joins, and avoid flooding the floor with water when cleaning.

Every so often, check the seals around the toilet pan, the floor waste and the edges of the room, and look under the washing machine and behind the dishwasher for slow leaks. A small leak found early is easy to fix; a slow leak left for months is what damages floors, skirting and walls.

    Cost and planning

Laundries, toilets and entries are small areas, so they are often done at the same time as the kitchen or living areas. Running one waterproof floor through all of them usually costs less per square metre than doing each room separately, and it looks better because there are fewer joins and trims. Our flooring cost guide lists typical Gold Coast price ranges for vinyl plank, hybrid and other floors.

The best way to choose is to see samples in your own rooms. We bring vinyl plank, hybrid and sheet vinyl samples to your home, measure every room, check the slab and give you a fixed written quote that covers removal, preparation, trims and installation.

    Frequently asked questions

Waterproof vinyl plank or hybrid flooring suits most laundries. Glue-down vinyl plank is a good choice for small laundries with a floor waste, because it sits tight to the slab with no underlay underneath.

The planks are waterproof, so spills and wet feet will not damage them. A floating hybrid floor is not designed to hold back large amounts of water, so edges and floor wastes should be finished properly and leaks fixed promptly.

Vinyl plank can suit a powder room or toilet without a shower. Showers and other areas that need a waterproofing membrane are part of a bathroom renovation done by a licensed waterproofer and tiler, and are usually tiled.
